Hyper-V virtualization and cloning

Area

Industrial unit. Private sector

Technology

Microsoft

Environment

Client who has a server with Windows 2008 SBS (with board problems), Sage Murano and a computer with general slowness. The state of copies and the complex situation that will occur with hardware anomalies are also of concern.

Project requirements

The aim is to migrate to an updated solution, maintaining the software as it is as an essential client requirement.

Solutions

For the client's computer, the disk is cloned to an SSD disk without any major complications (some license associated with the hardware always skips).

As for the server, a virtualization of the existing Windows 2008 SBS server through hyper-v is proposed. The server gives initial problems due to existing software and encrypted drives. We remove existing non-critical software, decrypt the drives and generate the contents manually. From there, it allows us to do virtualization. We have some network interface conflict that we can resolve through the two network outputs that the server has. Finally, we found a final problem with the Sage Murano license, linked to the detected hardware. To do this, we require Sage to regenerate the licenses in the existing installation. Finally, we mount copies of the virtual machine and the system is stable.
